rainy date

shirt: american eagle | tie: gap | belt: thrifted | pants: gap | shoes: sperry topsider
top: banana republic (it's actually my easter dress) | skirt: thrifted | bangles//belt: charlotte russe | shoes: gianni bini

we're coming to the end of our lease here in the green apartments, & home hunting season is in full bloom. we spent the first half of our date yesterday looking at the apartments that made it through to the potential round. it was a little overwhelming, a little sad & a little exciting - all of that smashed together. we have a month & a half to get the warm & fuzzies about a new little home.

nooooo pressure.

jared took me on a daylong date today. a whole day filled with him & me & me & him. & triple chocolate cheesecake. that's love.

the loss of summer

I knew what I would greet when I opened the front door this morning. summer. summer in aaall of its southern virginia glory. at 8 a.m., it was already 82 degrees. add in the humidity & it already felt like 90. I considered taking the time to trade in my hot coffee for the iced coffee variety. No, not enough time. I slid my hooded jacket off the coat rack since the office is usually cold & my phone was telling me to expect thunderstorms right about the time that I would be walking back to my car at the end of the day. the rain almost always waits until about 4:50 p.m. before it pours, it seems. bring it on, I thought.

as I tugged open the door & took my first step into the day, I was filled with summer. wednesday was technically the first day of summer, I know that, but my head has been in 348 places this week, & this morning was my first acknowledgement that summer has arrived. & not only was summer staring me in the face, but there was this nostalgia factor that I wasn’t expecting.

it felt distinctly like a high school summer day. one of those mornings that I should have slept in until at least 10 a.m. because I stayed up until way-too-late-o-clock for absolutely no reason. one of those mornings that you just go straight to bathing suit, regardless of whether or not the day’s plans involve water. & after I finally rolled out of bed & into a swimsuit, I’d promptly roll myself to the couch to turn on the tv & watch a What Not to Wear marathon or Dawson’s Creek reruns until the pool demanded my attention so loudly that I couldn’t ignore it.

instead, I congratulated myself on the choice to leave my hair in its natural state rather than wage war with the humidity, armed with a straightener whose defeat would have been imminent upon opening the door. because professionals don’t have frizzy hair. or something.

it’s a funny thing – growing up, the loss of summer. most days, it’s the gradual acceptance of adulthood that it’s supposed to be. but some days, it’s tough! the daily grind? it’s pretty daily. & grind-y.

I’m leaving next weekend for a visit with my best friend over the 4th of July. it's our favorite holiday. it always has been, since our little town in Indiana celebrates it the best. I haven’t seen her since the day after my wedding, & we’re going to talk about her wedding the entire time I’m there. I need to see her - this girl who I used to spend my summers with who now wears a ring on her finger. the perfect best-friend-who-lives-next-door that spent hours braiding my hair in her backyard as we lazed around on her family’s hammock. swaying under the two giant oak trees that separated our backyards. exhausted from bike rides to & from the neighborhood pool with freeze pops stuffed into our pockets. we’re planning her wedding to her prince, & I get to finally meet him. how many conversations did we share about him surrounded by mosquitos & fireflies?

summer is not all lost. some mornings, I do still roll right into my bathing suit to spend the day under an umbrella at the beach. but the bonus to growing up is that my prince is at my side, which trumps poolside with the family pooches any day.

a little monday

we snuck off this morning for a teeny date before husband headed off to work for the rest of the day, & I brought the camera since I was feeling just a liiiittle bit guilty about not posting a sunday best yesterday. I drank some toffee something-something. he drank 4 shots of espresso to get him through the day. he told me I looked pretty. I told him not to go to work. but in the end, we parted ways like responsible adults & I went grocery shopping while he rode off in the opposite direction to bring home bacon & whatnot.

it's a good life, even if it's a busy one. I am loved.

father's day

me + papa, 1989

I'm laughing right now because my dad has the hair in 1989 that my husband strives for every day here in 2012. he's a handsome fella, that papa of mine. father to four girls, doting husband & man of God... he deserves every piece of father's day happiness. I love you, dad!

the good

good things about today:

it rained & I was driving a car that doesn't threaten to shut off at every stop light. my boss & I were laughing within ten minutes of arriving at work, which is a good start to the work week. a little old lady complimented my posture. macadamia/white chocolate cookies for an after-lunch dessert. the lady who rescued the four little ducklings that I found last week sent us pictures & my babies are doing juuuust fine.   I researched the pomodoro technique & downloaded a sweet app to help me get started. I VOTED, which I just think is so much fun for some reason. chipotle for dinner with my mom & sisters, always a plus. home under stormy clouds with a ridiculously long book that I'm not even sure that I like but have to finish (The Pillars of the Earth, ever read it??). burning a brand new candle.

these are some pretty good things about today.

sunday best

we had 15 minutes to snap these pictures before I jetted off to work for a teensy little event. so, yes, those are our downstairs neighbors' windows. totally precious.

shirt -  j. crew
tie - gap
pants - h&m
belt - thrifted
shoes - sperry topsider

dress - h&m (I shop other places. really, I do.)
belt - charlotte russe
shoes - target
lips - revlon, stormy pink

today's been the icing on a month-long cupcake of unrest. so, I'm going out in yoga pants & hot-mess-face to buy hair bleach & red velvet ice-cream. oh yes, she diiiiid.

sunday best

well, happy june! it's somehow the weekend again, which really snuck up on me after a teensy little 4 day work week. but my jilted job exacted its revenge in the form of an 18 hour day at work yesterday, & I am thus calling it even.

it has been suggested that I start detailing the brands we're wearing. while I'm not opposed, it feels like a really big step into the world of "fashion blogging" & well... that sort of title makes me itchy. & a little sweaty. sorry, but it does. I am always up for hives & a good cold sweat, however, so here I go. are you ready?

every single thing I'm wearing above came from h&m. even the shirt underneath my polka dot top. shoes, nail polish... guess how often that happens? zero. that happens zero often. except for the first sunday that I'm naming the brands I'm wearing. pretty sure that's not how this is supposed to work.

jared is also wearing h&m, but his tie is j. crew & his shoes are thrifted. & his hair was gifted by God.

so awesome. yaaaay free advertising. ugh, maybe I'll be better at this next week. but no promises ;)
